The seed of this song was planted when a very close friend confided to me their feelings of enduring a painful breakup; but the song grew to be more universal when it began to demonstrate how, when we are profoundly wounded, we sometimes prefer to sit in the pain rather than move on because moving on forces us acknowledge “the end”.
Lyrics
I’m a prisoner of my heart
The sound of your sweet voice echoes
In every bar
I’m sentenced to this space
Where you are
I’m a prisoner of my mind
Where you live and breathe and love
And smile
I’m captivated by the light
In your eyes
Memories bleed
Memories bleed
Memories bleed
And I don’t want to be set free
I’m a prisoner of time
There is no ahead and no behind
Suspended in this place
Where I still call you mine
I’m a prisoner of my soul
Tethered by the many lives
We have known
And the promise that was whispered
So long ago
Memories bleed
Memories bleed
Memories bleed
And I don’t want to be set free
Illusions become real
No escape from what I feel
Here nothing, nothing is concealed
I’m a prisoner of my tears
Every one that falls a stinging souvenir
I save them for the darkness
When you disappear
Illusions become real
There’s no escape from what I feel
Here nothing, nothing is concealed
Memories bleed
Memories bleed
Memories bleed
Memories bleed
And I don’t want to be set free
